Bank stocks in the U.S. and Europe tumbled on Wednesday as the global financial system continued to reckon with the Silicon Valley Bank house cleaning franchise collapse, the largest bank failure since 2008. The turn downward follows news on Tuesday that the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission are probing the fall of Silicon Valley Bank. A stock represents a share in the ownership of a company, including a claim on the company's earnings and assets. As such, stockholders are partial owners of the company. When the value of the business rises or falls, so does the value of the stock. Hutch Corbett, managing partner of Armentum Partners, a Menlo Park, California-based investment bank focused on the venture-debt business, says his firm has closed 37 transitions since the end of 2021, raising a combined $3.7 billion in capital. He says most of those were for relatively late stage technology and healthcare companies, with rounds varying in size from about $20 million to as much as $500 million.
